Saltgrass House
Killala Bay in the evening, seen from the front garden

Saltgrass House

Four rooms, breakfast from our own kitchen, and Killala Bay at the bottom of the field.

We're Úna and Declan, and this is our home.

Declan's family have farmed this stretch of the coast road since the 1950s. When our children grew up and moved away we had four empty bedrooms, a big kitchen and a view of the bay we thought should be shared, so in 2014 we started taking guests.

It's a house, not a hotel. You'll have your own key, the sitting room has a stove and a shelf of maps and books, and there's nearly always a pot of tea on. We're around most of the day and glad to point you to a quiet beach, a good walk or a pub with music on a Thursday.

Where we are

We're on the coast road about 5 km north-west of Killala, on the Wild Atlantic Way. Ballycastle is fifteen minutes further along, and Ballina, with the train to Dublin and a good choice of restaurants, is twenty minutes the other way.

Ireland West Airport Knock is about an hour's drive. There's no bus to the door, so you'll want a car or a bike. If you're coming by train, we can usually collect you from Ballina station.

What guests have said

“We came for two nights and stayed four. The brown bread alone is worth the drive, and Declan's directions to the blowhole at Downpatrick Head were better than any guidebook.”

“Spotless room, a proper hot shower and a very quiet night. Úna sent us off to the Céide Fields with a flask of tea on a wet day.”

Mark and Ellen, LeedsBooking.com, September 2025

“The Garden Room was ideal for my mother, who uses a stick. No stairs and an easy shower.”

Áine, GalwayGoogle, August 2025
